Utah State University: Cohort Default Rate

The cohort default rate measures the percentage of borrowers from a particular group (or cohort) of USU students who have entered the repayment phase for their student loans during a specific federal fiscal year (from October 1 to September 30) and have subsequently defaulted on their loans or met other specified conditions before the end of the following fiscal year. The default rate indicates the proportion of USU students who are unable to meet their loan repayment obligations within a certain timeframe after entering the repayment period.

This rate serves as an important metric for assessing the financial health of a school's student loan programs and provides insights into the effectiveness of borrower management and support services. For prospective students, comparing cohort default rates across different schools can help them make a more informed decision about where to enroll. Schools with lower rates may demonstrate a commitment to supporting their graduates' financial success. For a more detailed explanation of cohort default rates and the methodology employed for their computation, please consult the Cohort Default Rate Guide.
