Federal Aid Deadlines

Federal Financial Aid is time sensitive. Please be aware of our processing deadlines so that you don't miss out on funding opportunities. Federal regulations do not allow USU to offer funding after a deadline has passed. We also encourage you to review USU academic deadlines for course registration, course withdrawal, tuition payment, etc.

FAFSA Documentation Requirements:  You must resolve any FAFSA documentation requirements such as proof of citizenship, default resolution, etc., before we can offer you federal aid including grants and loans. You must submit required documentation before you stop attending the academic year you want to receive federal aid, before finals week of that term.

FAFSA Verification Review Process:  You must resolve any FAFSA verification documentation requirements such as listing your household members, uploading income documentation, etc., before the funding deadlines below:

  • Federal Direct Loan:  you must submit required documentation by the last day of class before finals week, remain enrolled at least half-time, and accept your loans before the last day of finals.
  • Federal Pell Grant: you must submit required documentation before the verification deadlines for the specific semester you are currently attending listed in the tables below.

Marital Status Updates: If you are now married, you must update your marital status on the FAFSA before the last day of classes of the current semester you are attending (not finals week). For summer semester, marriage dates after the June 30 FAFSA deadline will not be processed for that award year. See additional FAFSA verification deadlines above.

Withdrawing Early: Federal regulations allow you to keep a percentage of your federal aid based on how much of the semester you completed. The remainder of your federal aid must be returned unless you complete more than 60% of the semester before dropping your courses. Completion means turning in assignments, taking tests, etc. Please visit our early withdrawal page for more details.

Academic Progress Appeals: You must submit your appeal by the specific semester deadline listed below to give your Federal Aid Counselor sufficient time to request additional explanation or required documentation. Early deadlines are necessary in case your appeal cannot be approved and you need to drop your courses before the last day to receive a refund.  If you feel there were extenuating circumstances which prevented you from meeting the appeal deadline, you will need to contact your Federal Aid Counselor to discuss your options.

Processing Times: Completed verification and appeals are reviewed within 15 business days. Students will receive an update via email once their verification or appeal has been processed.
