Hosting a Fulbright Visiting Scholar

About the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program

The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program allows for 1 application per institution for each award cycle. Scholars-in-Residence work across departments and curricula to enhance an international program, develop new world area studies programs or add an international dimension to coursework.

USU faculty members interested in applying for this award must communicate their intent to the Senior Vice Provost for Global Engagement. The USU faculty mentor is responsible to submit the application, with approval from the Office of Global Engagement. The faculty member is responsible for the design and execution of the program at USU.

Per the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence website: “U.S. institutions may not host Fulbright Scholar-In-Residence participants in consecutive academic years. An institution hosting an S-I-R in a given academic year must wait one academic before hosting a subsequent S-I-R. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received a Scholar-in-Residence award.”

Application Materials

The Office of Global Engagement supports an application through the following mechanisms:

  • Providing a letter of institutional support for the application, signed by the Senior Vice Provost for Global Engagement;
  • Guidance on crafting a compelling justification for how hosting another S-I-R now would build upon the success of any prior S-I-R programs at USU;
  • Sharing information on USU’s current and previous experience with international or world area studies programs;
  • Communicating plans for internationalizing the USU campus;
  • Serving as the point contact for IIE and coordinating other logistics beyond the scholar’s academic, professional, and community activities.

If the Award is Granted

Fulbright takes care of the recruiting of the visiting scholar if the USU faculty host did not identify an individual in the application. Be sure to encourage visiting scholars interested in the program to apply for the Fulbright award in their home country.

Notify the Office of Global Engagement of the award by emailing exchangevisitors@usu.edu.

  • Include any communication from the Fulbright program regarding the award.
  • Remember to send a copy of the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence’s curriculum vitae and Terms of Appointment once a scholar is selected for the award at USU.
  • The Vice Provost for Global Engagement is the authorized institutional representative to sign forms on behalf of USU for Fulbright grantees regarding institutional commitments, if the grant is awarded

Fulbright Scholars-in-Residence are paid a stipend directly by IIE or by Commissions at a modest living expense rate. It is not a requirement that their hosts pay them additionally, although some do. Teaching as a part of a Fulbright scholar exchange is allowed, although research only is most common. Fulbright funds individual scholarships, and never gives funding to institutions for redistribution.
