Ralph Maughan’s association with Utah State University Athletics began in 1941 and spanned nearly five decades. Standing 6-foot-2, Ralph’s career as a USU athlete included lettering for four years in both football and track and three years in basketball.

In the middle of his budding athletic career, Ralph enlisted in the Reserve Corps and was later sent to France and Belgium during World War II. He was a bazooka man during the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service.

Following the war, Ralph returned to Utah State Agricultural College (now USU), where he was a member of the school’s first two football teams to earn bowl berths in 1946 and 1947.

Ralph left professional football for Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, to coach football, basketball and track for three years. He was also the head of the Physical Education Department and the dean of men.

Ralph would later return to USU to serve as assistant coach for the Aggie football and basketball teams. In 1951, he was promoted to head coach for the track team and held the position until 1988. During that time, he coached several national champions, including four Olympians.
