Orientation Breakfasts

A week prior to your scheduled orientation you should receive an email inviting you to the first-generation student breakfast. The breakfast takes place prior to your scheduled orientation start time. Incoming students and families are welcome to attend and learn more about what it means to be an Aggie First Scholar and other Utah State University resources available to first-generation college students. If you are a first-generation student and did not recieve an invite, please reach out to afs@usu.edu. 

AFS First Year Orientation 

Saturday, August 24th, 2024, join Aggie First Scholars for the first year orientation. This orientation is for all first-year Utah State University students who identify as first-generation scholars. At the Aggie First Scholar First Year Orientation, you will receive faculty introductions, meet your peer mentor, learn about campus resources and more! Lunch is provided. 

Class Registration 

As a first-generation college student, it is highly recommended that you register for the following courses to optimize the support and resources available to you. 

During the fall semester, Aggie First Scholars offers USU 1050: Habits of Mind for First-Generation Students. This 1-credit class spans the last 7 weeks of the semester, providing valuable insights and skills tailored to first-generation college students.

In the subsequent spring semester, Aggie First Scholars continues to offer USU 1050 for the initial 7 weeks and introduces USU 1150: Applied Leadership for First-Generation Students, a 1-credit course spanning the final 7 weeks. Both USU 1050 and USU 1150 constitute a cohesive cohort of first-generation students and are instructed by faculty/staff who themselves are first-generation college graduates. This unique structure aims to foster a supportive and celebratory learning environment for first-generation college students.

How do I Receive a Peer Mentor?
All first-generation students are eligible for an Aggie First Scholar Peer Mentor. Our certified peer educators identify as current first-generation students from diverse backgrounds. By having a peer mentor, you will receive a once-a-month complimentary meal from dining services, access to social opportunities, mentorship, and the chance to build a lifelong network.
