NEHMA Sculpture Walk & Audio Tour

Tilting Arc is the only kinetic sculpture—a sculpture designed to move—on USU’s campus. Made by George Baker, its stainless steel blades continually shift and turn in response to the direction and speed of wind.

Ann Preston’s Passacaglia is permanently installed in the lobby of the Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall.

John Ohran’s sculpture Concentric Arcs is one of the six winners of the 2000 Logan Biennial National Outdoor Sculpture Competition held at USU.

Pivotal Concord is the largest sculpture on the USU campus. Created by David Deming, the steel sculpture consists of two rectangular slabs that appear to launch from the ground and meet in the air.

Joseph Kinnebrew’s welded steel sculpture SNAFU is located outside the south-east side of the Merrill-Cazier Library. It is the most popular sculpture on campus mainly due to its nickname among USU students: “The Yellow French Fries.”

Larry Elsner originally made these three identical spheres to serve as light fixtures for the lobby of the Merrill Library, which is now the location of the Agricultural Sciences building.

Dale Eldred’s Light and Time Incident is located on the south-facing atrium of the Merrill-Cazier Library. The installation consists of seven vertically hanging panels, each containing eight rectangles of diffraction grating.

The 20-foot-tall sculpture Soft Rain hangs above the main staircase inside USU’s Agricultural Sciences building.

Since 2010, sculptor Ryoichi Suzuki has served as Assistant Professor of Sculpture in USU’s Department of Art and Design.

Avard T. Fairbanks came from an artistic family. His father, John B. Fairbanks, was an artist and an art instructor at Brigham Young Academy, now Brigham Young University.

A native of Utah, Avard T. Fairbanks was a nationally renowned sculptor, anatomist, and educator. He was also the founding Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah.

The sculpture The Block A represents the pride and spirit of the USU campus community.

James Russell’s elegant, ribbon-like sculpture Sojourn is located on the north-east side of Old Main Hill.

USU alumnus Dr. Tweesackdi Sesaweech donated Prince Phra Apai Manee, the Musician to the University in 2001.
