September 2021 Newsletter

Colleagues,

September is upon us, and I have many Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) announcements for this month:

First, we are pleased to announce the release of a new research and policy brief today titled “The Impact of COVID-19 on Utah Women and Work: Health Impacts.” Thanks to my co-researchers Marin Christensen, Jenna Dyckman, and Dr. Dianne McAdams-Jones for their fabulous work on this brief. In addition, a few weeks ago we released a research and policy brief titled, “The Impact of COVID-19 on Utah Women and Work: Resilient Mindset and Wellbeing” (with Dr. Jared Hansen, Joseph Hansen, and Dr. Chris Hartwell).  These two briefs complete our COVID-19 research and policy briefs series (6 reports in total).

Second, we have a new “What Can I Do?” idea sheet titled “What Mayors Can Do to Strengthen the Impact of Utah Girls and Women.” Thanks to community volunteer Staci Liljegren for her contributions and for the mayors who joined brainstorming meetings. We are also releasing a new policy white paper titled “Utah is Changing: Should Our Leave Laws Follow Suit?” We commissioned Jenna Gould, a policy analyst, to do an in-depth analysis of all 50 state’s leave laws and provide recommendations for Utah.

Third, we have three free events coming up (RSVP online) sponsored by the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business, USU Extension, and the Utah Education Network (UEN):

1. A Fireside Chat with Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson on Women and Leadership (Oct. 1, Noon-1:15pm; RSVP to attend either at USU Brigham City Campus or online)
2. How Women Rise: Break the 12 Habits Holding You Back from Your Next Raise, Promotion, or Job (with globally-known author Sally Helgesen, Oct. 29, Noon-1:15pm, Virtual)
3. Strengthening Your Emotional Health as Women (Nov. 12, Noon-1:15pm, Virtual)

Fourth, in partnership with Utah Public Radio (UPR), we have released two new podcasts:

1. When Women Don’t Speak: What It Takes for Women To be Heard – This episode discusses what it takes for a woman to be truly heard, bringing you the highlights from a March 2020 Women’s Leadership Forum exploring this issue. I’m joined by two professors at Brigham Young University: Dr. Jessica Preece and Dr. Christopher F. Karpowitz.
2. Mammography Among Utah Women – In March of 2017, the UWLP published a research snapshot on this topic and even though it is a few years old, it is such an important topic that we want to discuss some of the highlights in this podcast episode. I’m joined by Robbyn Scribner, lead researcher on the report.

Fifth, we have a few more resources to highlight this month:
