EAREA Sophomore Scholarship

The Utah State University Emeriti and Retired Employees Association Sophomore Scholarship is awarded by the USU EAREA Chapter, which is part of the USU Alumni Association. It is anticipated there will be two $7,000 scholarships awarded to Sophomore-rank USU students for the upcoming school year ($3500 each per semester) to a Utah resident and to a non-resident.

Selection Eligibility

  • Must demonstrate financial need (including completed FAFSA)
  • Must have demonstrated superior academic progress and performance in your university studies at USU.
  • The candidate(s) for the scholarship shall have completed two (2) semesters of study as a full-time student on a Utah State University campus, according to the USU official transcript and expect to be a first semester Sophomore by the Fall semester of their award.
  • Must be a full-time student during the semesters for which you will be receiving the scholarship (full-time student status is defined by USU standards).
  • Scholarship is for tuitions and fees only
  • Scholarship award recipients are invited to attend the annual awards luncheon in April.
  • Preference will be given to first-generation college students in case of a tie.

Completing the Application

The following are required to have a completed application:

  • Upload your USU program of study from Degree Work.
  • A personal statement of “Goals and Objectives” 

    The candidate will submit a 1-2 page personal essay discussing the value of an education, how it will prepare the student to meet career and personal goals and how it will prepare the candidate to contribute to the community. Personal circumstances and experiences that are pertinent like family structure, community or communities where you have lived, work, volunteer experience, leadership and community activities should be included. Any identifying names or locations should be omitted.

Do credits for the classes I am currently taking count towards the total?

Yes

Do college credits earned during high school or from another institution count towards my credit total?

They do if they appear on your "official" USU transcript.

How many scholarships are awarded?

We anticipate two $7,000 scholarships will be offered for the upcoming academic year ($3,500 for fall semester, $3500 for the following spring semester) for Utah resident and for non-resident.

How are the applicants judged?

Applications received at the USU Alumni Relations office are submitted to the USU EAREA Council Scholarship Selection Committee and reviewed to ensure applicant meets all requirements. An interview will be required of all finalists.

How will I receive the money?

Half of the money, the amount for one semester, will be deposited to your university account. The rest will be deposited before the second semester.

When will I be notified?
