Step 2: Research Your Option

If you prefer to participate in career exploration at your own pace, enroll in our Career Tutorials Open Canvas Class! It’s free, self-paced, and can help you move forward. You’ll find a module on Exploring Majors and Careers that can help you interpret your Focus2 results and give you next steps.

If you prefer more of a structured approach, you can:

• Enroll in USU 1400, a 7-week, 1 credit online course that takes you through the Major and Career Exploration Process
• Schedule an appointment with a career coach to discuss your Focus2 results and how to move forward by using the Schedule an Appointment button at the top of the page. Based on your campus, look at the list of coaches at the bottom of this page.

Here are our favorite sites to research major and career options:

• Onet Online: this database of occupations can help you dig into details about a career such as tasks, values, environment, educational requirements, and wage/employment trends
• What Can I Do With My Major: this database can help you see so many great directions you can go with a major. Just search a major and browse through all the areas and strategies on how to get there
• DegreeFinder: search through majors, minors, certificates, etc. that USU has to offer. You can search by keyword such as 'nature' or look through a list of all the options
  • We highly recommend clicking on the options that interest you and reading through the whole page such as 'about this degree, career options, and course listings'. The course listings can help you identify intro classes you might want to take and help you see if the majority of the classes look interesting to you
  • You can also consider doing a minor or certificate with your major. Talk to your academic adviser about pairing a minor or certificate with your major. You can add on any minor or certificate that you want - it doesn't need to match your major. However, the linked resource shows you what is most popular by major.

Step 3: Take Action

Once you've researched options, it's time to take action and test out your ideas. Here is a list of resources to help you do that. Remember, the best way to discover what major or career you are most interested is to test it out. Do a small activity such as job shadowing, volunteering, taking an intro course, etc. to see how the option feels.
