We are heading down south to the amazing red rock and blue waters of Lake Powell to explore some of its many side canyons in sea kayaks. We will pack our kayaks with our gear and spend two nights camping on the lake. Participants must be able to swim and comfortable in open water. Wuda Ogwa Planting Days

Join the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation for a volunteer day, planting willows, cottonwoods, dogwoods, currants, and other native plants at the Wuda Ogwa restoration site.
Please bring a refillable water bottle, work gloves, shovels, and hand augers if you have them. Water and snacks will be provided.

NEHMA highlights this tradition by creating a large ofrenda (offering table) in the lobby of the museum. On display are calaveras (decorated skulls), photos, food, candles, and marigold flowers to represent different kinds of ofrendas. People are welcome to dedicate a small portion of that ofrenda to someone they lost by writing their name on the ofrenda wall. Come visit the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art and our Día de Los Muertos ofrenda!

Students are required to participate in these events as a large part of their grades, and these concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals. Legacy of Val Day of Service: Planting Day at Wuda Ogwa

Join us as we honor the legacy of Val R Christensen and support the Northwestern Band of Shoshone (NWB) in their efforts to restore the ecosystem at Wuda Ogwa (located outside of Preston, ID). We will be planting native plants throughout the property formerly known as the Bear River Massacre Site.
Let us know in the registration form if you'd like a spot in our minibus (only 14 spots available). Lunch will be provided by the NWB. We have some work gloves to lend out. Feel free to bring a digging tool (such as a shovel or a hand auger) if you have them.

The Bear Lake Needs Assessment Documentation & Visualization Project, led by assistant professor Jared Ragland and USU photography students, captures the intersection of Bear Lake's natural ecology and human use through documentary photography. This collaborative project showcases research-driven imagery on key topics such as agriculture, water management, and development, while highlighting the vital work of USU researchers and local community partnerships. The exhibition will be featured at the Tippets and Eccles Gallery and in USU’s Special Collections and Archives. This work was created in partnership with USU’s Institute for Land, Water, and Air and funded by a Bear Lake Needs Assessment grant administered by Utah Forestry, Fire, and State Lands.
The USU Art + Design Annual Graduate Art Exhibition showcases emerging artists' innovative and diverse works across various disciplines. Each work reflects the unique vision and creative journey of the graduates, offering a compelling exploration of contemporary themes and artistic practices.
These exhibitions run Nov. 4–Dec. 13 in the Tippetts & Eccles Galleries, open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) and Research, Scholarship & Creative Inquiry Intensive (RSCI) Course Designations

Join us as we transition from a Friday lunch to a Tuesday breakfast in our Teaching Tuesdays for USUE Faculty. At 10am on November 5th we will discuss the High-Impact Practices of course designations including CEL & RSCI. CEL designated courses include an aspect of community-engaged teaching or research that enriches the learning experience, teaches civic responsibility, and strengthens communities. Students who take these classes develop civic awareness and leadership skills, are able to practically apply their course materials and professional skills to address a community need, and engage in meaningful classroom reflection and discussion. The RSCI designation (course attribute) indicates that the course involves research-based learning and hands-on training in fundamental practices of original knowledge creation in a discipline. The Bear Lake Needs Assessment Documentation & Visualization Project, led by assistant professor Jared Ragland and USU photography students, captures the intersection of Bear Lake's natural ecology and human use through documentary photography. This collaborative project showcases research-driven imagery on key topics such as agriculture, water management, and development, while highlighting the vital work of USU researchers and local community partnerships. The exhibition will be featured at the Tippets and Eccles Gallery and in USU’s Special Collections and Archives. This work was created in partnership with USU’s Institute for Land, Water, and Air and funded by a Bear Lake Needs Assessment grant administered by Utah Forestry, Fire, and State Lands.
The USU Art + Design Annual Graduate Art Exhibition showcases emerging artists' innovative and diverse works across various disciplines. Each work reflects the unique vision and creative journey of the graduates, offering a compelling exploration of contemporary themes and artistic practices.

Five-Slide Friday is an informal get-together over lunch on (some) Fridays where faculty and students can present about their education, field of study, work experience, academic research, ASC project, new favorite data tool, etc., and answer questions. The objective is to help ease the friction that naturally occurs in interdisciplinary settings while helping both faculty and students learn and retool. Bring your lunch and, if you're presenting, remember that you can't prepare more than five slides!
Cache Symphony Orchestra

The Cache Symphony Orchestra was created over 35 years ago as a way for community members in the Cache Valley region to make music, meet with fellow musicians, and provide another source of fine classical music to the community.
The Orchestra is made up of community volunteers. It started with only a handful of musicians and has grown to a grand symphony with over 90 members. For the regular season, the orchestra performs on the campus of Utah State University twice a year: winter and spring.

November 9 (at NEHMA): Margaret Bruton Terrazzo Art Along with her two sisters Esther and Helen, Margaret Bruton left her native San Francisco to study at the Art Students’ League in NYC. Known collectively as the “Famous Bruton Sisters”, they were part of the Bohemian Renaissance in early twentieth-century San Francisco. Make a terrazzo inspired art piece with us to celebrate Bruton and her work, Untitled, featured in our museum.

Based on 11 interviews that Prof. Sebastiaan Faber of Oberlin College conducted with individuals involved in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the Francisco Franco dictatorship (1939-1975), Faber's work illustrates the enormous challenges as well as the enormous variety that comes with understanding history vis a vis "memory entrepreneurs."

The Bear Lake Needs Assessment Documentation & Visualization Project, led by assistant professor Jared Ragland and USU photography students, captures the intersection of Bear Lake's natural ecology and human use through documentary photography. This collaborative project showcases research-driven imagery on key topics such as agriculture, water management, and development, while highlighting the vital work of USU researchers and local community partnerships. The exhibition will be featured at the Tippets and Eccles Gallery and in USU’s Special Collections and Archives. This work was created in partnership with USU’s Institute for Land, Water, and Air and funded by a Bear Lake Needs Assessment grant administered by Utah Forestry, Fire, and State Lands.

Communitas - David Benjamin Sherry

David Benjamin Sherry is an artist working to challenge and reinvigorate the American Western landscape tradition by examining our complex interconnection with the natural world, with an emphasis on queer identity, color, and magic. Sherry’s work aims to celebrate the beauty of the American landscape and engage with the fraught history of the West, with its glorified legend of freedom fabricated from stolen lands, which continue to be threatened today. Through the media of analog film photography and painting, his vibrant, large-scale and often monochrome works present a new perspective on the subject. Sherry states that “color is a conduit for me to convey and promote an emotional resonance for the landscape, while weaving in my sense of otherness as a queer person, and to symbolically represent those who have been inaccurately left out of the American West’s mythical narrative of rugged (straight, white, male) individualism.”
Sherry was born in Stony Brook, New York, and lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He received his BFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 and his MFA in photography from Yale University in 2007, where he was awarded the Richard Dixon Welling Prize. In 2010, he received the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Visual Arts Grant. A multi-part installation of his work was exhibited in Greater New York 2010 at MoMA PS1, New York. Sherry taught Western landscape and large-format photography as a distinguished faculty member at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2018. In the fall of 2020, he joined the Yale MFA Photography program as a visiting critic, and in 2023, he taught the Graduate Seminar in Photography at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

The Music Box Concert Series: Chamber Music Concert

Comprised of Dr. Jeiran Hasan (flute), Marilyn Cole (oboe), Thiago Ancelmo (clarinet), Dr. Joel Ockerman (horn) and Leon Chodos (bassoon), the quintet will also be joined by guest artist Amy Glenn (piano) in this recital. In this session we will cover the challenging task of how to be a caring supporter of students while setting healthy boundaries and attending to your own self-care. We will do exercises to increase intentionality and consistency in boundary setting; consider our verbal and nonverbal boundary cue behaviors; play a Kahoot game to see if we’re merging into the therapist lane; do active script work for responding to struggling students; and consider personal “policies” for maximizing student support and healthy boundary setting. We will also discuss how to refer to which resources when small and big mental health issues arise.

USU Be Well and Registered Dietitian, Brooke Lister, present a workshop on digestive health. A healthy gut promotes overall well-being in many different areas of health. The food we eat significantly impacts the balance of bacteria in our gut which leads to either good or bad gut health. In this presentation, we will discuss the benefits of why having a healthy gut is important. We will also talk about dietary changes that can be made to increase the number of good bacteria in your gut! *Presentation will be recorded. Concerts are part of the band’s large ensemble curriculum. As capstone events, they typically occur twice per semester. Participation in these events is a significant component of students’ grades, and the concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals. All concerts are associated with one or more of the following band ensembles: MUSC 4700 Wind Orchestra, MUSC 3795 Wind Symphony, MUSC 3790 Symphonic Band, and MUSC 3785 Marching Band.

In a time when respectful dialogue and understanding are more essential than ever, we invite community members, leaders, and advocates to join us for an engaging panel dedicated to fostering civility and dignity across Utah. Tami Pyfer will discuss the Dignity Index, which serves as a powerful tool for measuring and promoting dignity in our interactions. This framework helps individuals and organizations assess their impact on others and encourages practices that uphold the inherent worth of every person. Becky Edwards will talk about her passion around electing responsive, thoughtful Utahns who will focus on civility and have complex policy conversations that focus on true governing. Civility and dignity are overarching topics important to A Bolder Way Forward (BWF). The BWF aims to inspire Utahns to engage in civil discourse and make meaningful connections across differences. To do this, we encourage Utahn’s across the state to focus on active listening, empathy, and respectful communication, which will pave the way for creating positive change in Utah.

Honor the legacy of Val Christensen by pitching in at the Loaves & Fishes Community Meal! Volunteers will be prepping and serving food, bussing tables, washing dishes, and helping set up and take down. Most volunteers are needed on Saturday, but there are a few slots to fill on Friday night for prep. Click the Register button to be taken to the sign up form. Loaves & Fishes is non-denominational, but takes place inside First Presbyterian Church in Logan because there is a commercial kitchen there. The word "muse" describes a source of inspiration. This annual music therapy concert aims to highlight the multi-faceted sources of inspiration for USU music therapy students both personally and professionally. In our field of study, we often talk about “self as instrument”, or rather, being the instrument of change within the therapeutic relationship. During MUSES, we get to shift our focus to also celebrate our external musical skills and instruments as extensions of ourselves, and the tools by which we get to share creative self-expression with the world. Concert goers will enjoy original compositions in addition to contemporary and classical pieces that have been intentionally chosen to represent the experiences of our students and potential clinical applications of these works in music therapy practice. 13,000+ Years of Indigenous History in Eastern Utah
Lecture/Readings
Eastern Utah is well-known for the spectacular rock art found in places like Nine Mile Canyon and the Puebloan architecture of Bears Ears National Monument and other landscapes. But the stories of the indigenous people who have called this land home for millennia are also preserved in much less notable sites that reflect the ephemera of daily activities such as cooking a meal or making a tool. Join Dr. Tim Riley as he explores the material history of this landscape with a focus on how we can learn more about people from the objects they left behind and how we can visit these places today with minimal impact and maximal respect.
