General Travel Restrictions
USU uses data from various sources, including International SOS and the US Department of State, to develop a risk level for international travel destinations. These risk levels are typically for an entire country but in some places the risk levels may be different for certain regions or cities within a country.
University Related Travel (URT) programs that involve undergraduate students are not allowed to countries that are rated as high risk. Faculty and staff may request travel to those areas but will be required to prepare a health and safety plan and a risk management plan for that travel.
Travel is not allowed to countries with a restricted or extreme risk rating without a specific recommendation from the ITOC. Undergraduate students are never allowed to travel to these restricted countries on university related travel. Restricted countries and/or regions change from time to time and you should check with Risk Management if you have any questions.

Risk Levels
Low – Countries and areas that are generally secure and maintain adequate security, emergency services, and sound infrastructure as well as international standard medical care.
Medium – Countries and areas that experience periodic political unrest, violent protests or insurgencies and/or have limited access to international standard medical care.
High – Countries and areas that experience regular periods of political instability, government corruption, and failed or failing institutions and where access to international standard medical care is limited or unavailable.
Restricted – Countries where the University has no insurance coverage and/or areas that the University has deemed unsuitable for university related travel.
