Brand Standards: Signage

Exterior Signage

Exterior signage includes all standardized building signage, building lettering, and other types of exterior signs. The regulation of these signs provides a unified, cohesive, and consistent system of university signage. All buildings are required to use standardized signage. Where old signs exist, customers are encouraged to retrofit to the campus standard when budgets allow. New exterior signs are subject to Sign Committee review.

Procedures

Fill out and submit a Facility Modification Request form. Once received, a facilities representative will contact you to determine the location and content of the sign and will provide a cost estimate for the project. Upon approval, the facilities' signage shop will manufacture and install the signs.

Signs constructed in conjunction with new building projects will be coordinated with the design and construction process.

Building Identification

University buildings are identified by one or more signs that are approximately 40” high with a sign face of 2’0” by 4’0”. They are made of aluminum and the face is Aggie Blue with white letters. The signs are to be located perpendicular to traffic for easy identification. The location and design shall be coordinated with Facilities. The only logos permitted on buildings for identification signs are official Utah State University logos.

Building Lettering

Every major university building is identified with metal lettering that is affixed to the exterior of the building. All building lettering is required to be in the Helvetica font, and the material must be either extruded or cast aluminum with a natural or dark bronze finish, depending on the exterior color of the building. Plastic letters are not allowed.

Historical Quad Signs

These signs were designed to represent the historic quad district of campus. There are two panels on each sign: The top contains the building name and date of construction, and the bottom gives departmental information. These signs cannot be used outside of the historic quad district.
