Trademark Review Process

Internal & Student Use

All print pieces, branded good, and other items (such as t-shirts, mugs, and other similar items) bearing the university's name and/or trademarks must be pre-approved by University Marketing & Communications, Trademark Licensing.

Please submit your artwork for approval via the Service Now Artwork Approval Request.

University administration reserves the right to prohibit certain trademark and logo uses that it deems inappropriate or inconsistent with USU’s image and mission.

Outside Entity Use

Any unlicensed use of USU Trademarks by an Outside Entity is prohibited. Review the university brand standards for Endorsements, Sponsorships, and Co-Branding.

Under certain conditions, USU licenses rights to USU Trademarks to Outside Entities.

All uses of University Trademarks by outside entities must be reviewed and pre-approved by University Marketing & Communications, Trademark Licensing.

Prohibited Uses

All requests to use the university trademarks and/or logos that could be perceived as an endorsement, sponsorship, co-branding, being used for companies, products, or services for alcohol, recreational drugs, firearms, gambling, performance enhancing supplements, etc. (this is not an all-inclusive list), will be reviewed following the processes outlined below.

All requests must be routed to the University Marketing & Communications, Trademark Licensing Director. The following decision flow chart will be used to route requests as they are received.

Review Process

Trademark Review Process Steps
The Trademark Review Process will follow these steps:

  1. Trademark Review Committee
    1. If approved, the Trademark Review Committee will route the request to the Reputation Management Committee for review (Step 2)
    2. If not approved, UMAC - Trademark licensing will communicate the decision to the requestor
  2. Reputation Management Committee
    1. If approved, UMAC - Trademark Licensing will communicate decision and assist the licensee with implementation
    2. If not approved, UMAC - Trademark licensing will communicate the decision to the requestor
