USU Faculty-led Programs

Intercultural Communication, Language, and Literature – Argentina

Immerse yourself in Spanish language and culture through a semester-long, USU faculty-led experience in Argentina! Students will take classes in the Programa de Español y Cultura Latinoamericana (PECLA) housed at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC), go on excursions that showcase Argentinian culture and history, and pair with local university students in a buddy program that allows them to develop their intercultural communication throughout the semester.

Semester-long program in Fall; can earn from 12-18 credits in SPAN classes.

This program is eligible for the Heravi Peace Scholarship.

Spanish Language – Spain

Study Spanish in Spain at all language levels! This four-week program at the Fundación Universidad de La Rioja in Logroño, Spain offers language, literature, and culture courses taught by qualified native Spanish speakers/instructors from the university, as well as weekly excursions to different parts of the country. Living in Spain for a month gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture, improving Spanish language skills and cultural understanding. Students from all majors are welcome.

Short-term program in Summer; can earn 6 credits in SPAN classes.

Cuba and the U.S.: People, Power, and Politics

This study abroad program offers USU students a unique opportunity to explore and better understand the complicated history and ongoing relationship between these two countries and how this relationship has impacted both countries economically, culturally, and politically to this day. More importantly, it offers students firsthand insights into these impacts, particularly for Cuba and the Cuban people.

Short-term program in Summer; can earn 3 credits in a POLS class.

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso – Chile

The Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV), founded in 1928, is one of the most prestigious, traditional higher educational institutions in Chile. The student body numbers over 13,000 students. The PUCV facilities include a modern library system, sport centers, specialized laboratories, and recreational centers. The university runs a television channel, radio station, and film storehouse. The university has several different campuses and university centers located in the main cities of the Valparaíso region. The region combines beautiful weather, wonderful beaches, and the splendid Cordillera de Los Andes. With a population of more than one million, the region has a multicultural flavor. The city of Valparaíso is the cultural and legislative capital, and the main commercial harbor, of Chile. 70 miles from the capital city of Chile, Santiago, Valparaíso fascinates visitors with its history, geography, and architecture.

Pontifícia Universidade Católica – Brazil

With approximately 10,000 undergraduate students, 2,500 graduate students and 5,000 extension students, PUC-RIO is internationally recognized as one of the top five universities in Brazil and one of the two best in Rio de Janeiro. The campus is located in Gávea, a charming neighborhood near the forest and beach. Its campus is a pleasant green area with a stream running through it; small monkeys and squirrels can be seen jumping up in the trees. Rio De Janeiro has an intense cultural life and various activities for international students, so it’s the perfect place for those who want to immerse themselves into the South American reality: plays, shows, concerts, exhibitions, street performances, scientific conferences, cultural debates - everything happens in Rio.

Universidad de la Rioja – Spain

The University of La Rioja (UR) is located on a modern campus in Logroño, capital of La Rioja. The UR is the only university in this small, quiet region in Northern Spain. La Rioja is where the Monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla, cradle of the first words written in the Spanish language, are situated: sites included in UNESCO`s World Heritage List in 1996. The University of La Rioja was founded in 1992 and, as a center devoted to Higher Education, research, and cultural promotion, has continued the work of these monasteries in disseminating knowledge and the Spanish language. The University of La Rioja campus is on the outskirts of the city, but only a short distance from the center of Logroño. La Rioja is a metropolitan area of 150,000 inhabitants and all the facilities of a modern capital, but with a comfortable, manageable size.

National Student Exchange – Puerto Rico

National Student Exchange (NSE) is a premier network of 160 colleges and universities offering collegiate study away to 2,000 students annually throughout the United States, Canada, and U.S. Territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. Students can look at available campuses on NSE’s website.

Fundación – Spain

The Spanish language and culture courses taught at of the University of La Rioja are aimed at students of all nationalities willing to learn Spanish or to improve their language level. USU Study Abroad partners with third-party program providers such as CIEE, ISEP, ISA, and SIT. These program providers set their own fees, though students can take advantage of direct billing, in which we can use their tuition to pay part of the program fee. Students on these programs often have excursions, visa support, and sometimes internships built into their programs.

EZC Study Abroad - Spain

EZC Study Abroad offers individualized internships with hands-on learning across multiple locations in Europe, including Ireland, Spain, and Italy. EZC Study Abroad tailors internships to each student, with support in obtaining a visa and securing housing, as well as on-site orientations and staff. They also offer welcome and farewell events, cultural activities through excursions, field trips, and Live Life Abroad, an activities program.
