Program Overview

Air Force ROTC is a four-year program that consists of 16 academic credits that are all centered around leadership, management, history, current events, and Air Force operations. These courses prepare you to become an Air Force or Space Force Officer after graduation while majoring in whatever field of study interests you.

Interested in ROTC but have less than 4 years of school left? Contact our recruiting officer Captain Matt Jordan to explore your options.

ROTC will help you hone your time-management skills, analytical skills, and physical fitness. The program is not easy, but if you are up to the challenge, the rewards will last a lifetime.

Service Commitment

One of the best things about ROTC is that you can try it out before you have to sign any sort of contract. You can complete the first two years of the program commitment-free. If at any point during those two years you decide the Air Force isn't for you, you are free to go! We recommend to anyone who is on the fence about joining—just try it out. Jump in with both feet. That way you will never find yourself wondering "what if..."

After graduation, the amount of time you will serve in the Air Force or Space Force depends on which career field you enter. Most fields require a four-year commitment, but "rated" career fields require additional commitment:

  • Pilot - 10 years after training
  • Combat Systems Operator - 6 years after training
  • RPA Pilot - 6 years after training
  • Air Battle Manager - 6 years after training

Scholarships

Air Force ROTC scholarships are incredible opportunities, and therefore are very competitive. Scholarships cover three things:

  1. Tuition and fees
  2. $900 every year for textbooks
  3. A non-taxable monthly stipend that goes straight to you for whatever you need

There are two programs to apply for an Air Force ROTC Scholarship:

  1. High School Scholarship Program (HSSP): Turn in this application prior to 1 December your senior year of high school. Visit AFROTC Scholarships for more information.
  2. In College Scholarship Program (ICSP): After completing at least one full semester of ROTC you could be eligible to apply for a full scholarship through ICSP. Just follow the Commander's priorities: get good grades, be physically fit, and display outstanding leadership and teamwork skills.

Time Commitment

The AFROTC Program requires roughly 6 hours per week from our Freshman and Sophomore cadets during the school year. These hours are comprised of:

  • 1 hour in Academic Class (AS 1010)
  • 2 hours in Leadership Lab (AS 1110)
  • 3 hours of Fitness Training (AS 3060)

Cadets also have the option of participating in other programs and activities:

  • Honor Guard
  • Service projects
  • Mentor meetings: each new cadet is assigned an upper class cadet as a mentor. Cadets generally meet with their mentor once a week to work on military skills or have questions answered, whatever the new cadet needs
  • Formal military dances and dinners
  • Visit active duty Air Force bases
  • Summer training: travel to different military bases throughout the country and learn things like how to parachute out of an airplane or how to fly a glider
