Placement Exams

Math Placement

The math placement exam used at Utah State University is the ALEKS program.  For information on how to use the ALEKS program and take the math placement exam, visit the campus Academic Testing Center in the Merrill-Cazier Library south entrance, email at testingcenter@usu.edu,  or call at 435-797-3617.  For study materials and other information regarding the test visit the Math Department's Math Placement Exam page

If you are not a USU student but need to take the ALEKS for another college or university, you must take the ALEKS through the Professional Testing Center.  There is a $30 proctoring fee to do this.  ALEKS for another school must be arranged by calling the Professional Testing Center at 435-797-1004 or emailing eric.wj@usu.edu

English Placement

There is no general English placement exam required for most USU students.

The English 0010 class, "Writing Tutorial," may be required for those whose ACT score is lower than 16 or who are referred after taking the writing diagnostic exam given on the first day of the English 1010 class.

Foreign Languages

Most foreign language testing at USU is handled through the World Languages and Cultures Department.  Some "pass" language credits in Spanish, French, and German can be earned through CLEP exams (see this page), but any "graded" language credit in those three languages and any type of credit in all other languages requires departmental testing in the World Languages and Cultures Department. Contact them for more details.  You can reach them at  (435) 797-1209, visit them at their website, or visit them at Old Main room 204.
